I grew up in Port Orchard, WA, and graduated from South Kitsap High School before going on to play college ball at Washington State University. During my sophomore year at WSU, I actually stepped away from playing and became the team’s equipment manager. Eventually, I restarted my career at Sierra College and later transferred to Lewis-Clark State.
After a year at LC State, I was fortunate enough to sign a free agent deal with the New York Yankees. I played in the organization from 2013–2015 and was surrounded by some of the best veterans and young stars the game has seen in a long time. While my own career didn’t fully materialize at the highest level, the knowledge I gained during those two years far exceeded what I’d learned in the previous ten.
Being around superstar athletes like Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Aaron Judge, Jacoby Ellsbury, CC Sabathia, and many others was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Not only did I get to see how these guys went about their work every day, but I was also fortunate to be coached by some of the most intelligent minds in the game. Many of them are now coaching in the big leagues and/or had long careers there themselves. The level of talent and insight at that level was unlike anything I’d ever been a part of, and that environment led to countless new insights—especially when it came to hitting.
After I was released, I asked the Yankees if I could come back for a week during Spring Training to shadow some of their hitting coaches and get a deeper understanding of how they think and talk about hitting. They let me sit in with nine different hitting coaches across all the affiliates and listen to them break down the swings of A-Rod, Judge, and other top players. The conversations I was a part of that week completely changed how I view hitting.
Since then, I’ve been coaching baseball and fitness for over 10 years, doing my best to pass along the information I’ve learned throughout my playing and coaching career. I work with teams and athletes to help instill concepts I picked up not just from my time with the Yankees, but also through years of continued learning as a coach. Helping athletes achieve their goals by distilling complex ideas into simple, actionable insights is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
